Risky play is an essential part of childhood development, helping children build resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Activities like climbing trees, exploring heights, and using tools not only improve physical coordination but also enhance a child’s ability to assess risks. However, finding innovative and safe ways to promote risky play can be a challenge for educators and parents. In my previous blog post, The Power of Risky Play: Why Letting Our Littles Push Their Limits Is Essential for Growth, we explored why pushing these boundaries is so vital for childhood development. Fortunately, artificial intelligence (AI) can serve as a helpful partner in this journey, generating fresh ideas, language, and scenarios that encourage safe yet adventurous play.
Expanding Your Risky Play Toolkit with AI
AI can assist you in brainstorming and customizing activities based on different environments, allowing children to engage in risky play while still prioritizing safety.
Generating Location-Based Ideas
Different settings offer unique opportunities for risky play. By using AI, you can receive tailored suggestions based on where you are:
- Natural Environments (e.g., forests): Ask for activities that involve climbing fallen logs, navigating steep hills, or building shelters with natural materials.
- Urban Parks: Request ideas that incorporate “loose parts,” like cardboard boxes, tires, or pallets, to create engaging challenges in a concrete setting.
- Indoor Spaces: Prompt the AI for “indoor risky play ideas for rainy days,” which might include activities such as heavy lifting, balancing on narrow beams, or playing games that involve navigating obstacles while blindfolded.
Fun and Engaging Games
If you find yourself relying on the same few games, AI can help spark new ideas for activities that promote teamwork and exploration. Consider asking for suggestions for games that encourage risky play, and you might discover:
- Spider Web: A game where children navigate a web made of stretchy cords without touching them.
- Tower Topple: Collaborative construction and careful demolition of tall structures, teaching teamwork and balance.
- Blind Trailing: A sensory challenge where children navigate through obstacles while blindfolded, relying on their friends for guidance.

Replacing “Be Careful” with Empowering Language
In moments of uncertainty, we often say phrases like “be careful,” but these may not provide children with the guidance they need. AI can help you come up with more empowering language that encourages mindfulness and self-awareness. Here are some suggestions:
- Instead of saying, “Be careful!” try “What is your next move?”
- Replace “Don’t go too high” with “Do you feel stable at that height?”
- Instead of “Slow down,” say “Pay attention to how your feet feel on the wood.”
- Change “Get down from there” to “How do you plan on getting back down safely?”
“The end of the school year is not just a conclusion but a stepping stone toward future possibilities!”
Safety and Scenario Training
While promoting risky play is vital, safety must always come first. AI can assist in conducting benefit-risk assessments. For instance, you can ask it to outline the potential hazards and developmental benefits of tree climbing for young children. This information can guide your approach to facilitating risky play.
Student-Led Problem Solving
Encouraging children to navigate risky situations through scenario-based learning can be very effective. You might prompt the AI to create short scenarios for small groups where students must decide how to approach a risky playground situation safely.
Example Scenario: “You and your friends discover a large, heavy branch you want to move. It’s slippery and near a muddy slope. What should you check before you try to lift it?”
These scenarios promote critical thinking and teamwork, helping children develop the skills to assess risks and make thoughtful decisions.
Visualizing Risk
AI-generated images can be powerful tools for classroom discussions. You can create visuals that depict situations like “a child balancing on a log over water” or “a group of kids building a fort with heavy sticks.” Use these images to engage students in discussions about:
- Where are the tricky spots in this picture?
- How could these kids make sure they don’t get hurt?
- What gear or shoes would be best for this activity?
Using AI to generate ideas for risky play can take much of the guesswork out of planning engaging activities for children. By embracing technology, educators can focus on what matters most – facilitating meaningful experiences that allow children to discover their capabilities, build confidence, and learn the importance of safety in a world full of adventures. Let’s empower our children to take risks while ensuring they do so in a safe and supportive environment.
