The generation of students in K-12 schools right now, and the generation to come, understand gender differently than the adults in their lives have been socialized to understand gender and sexuality. Students who identify as trans*, non-binary, or gender expansive may have requests in schools that include everything from bathroom and locker room use, to their name and pronouns, to extracurricular activities and special education needs. What are the rights of the students? What are the rights of the teachers or parents who may disagree with a student’s transition? Should each school have a policy or procedure in place? What does the future look like for transgender students in schools? In this session, presenter Jessica Heiser wears two hats: (1) the experienced attorney who will discuss the complex legal obligations of schools under ever-shifting federal and state laws, and (2) the certified change practitioner who will empower you to think larger than avoiding getting sued and more about how to create inclusive learning environments for all. Teacher Evaluation is crucial as we look to recruit and retain quality educators. It is vital our teacher effectiveness model, classroom observations, feedback and coaching opportunities, and goal setting with our teaching staff is exceptional. That quality begins with training the administrators within a district. This training incorporates all of the key components of the teacher effectiveness rubric but also embeds work related to retaining our teacher talent through effective feedback, building teacher efficacy, and assisting teachers with stretch goals. Under Indiana law, everyone has a duty to report child abuse or neglect. Nonetheless, most people do not fully understand what they have to report, when they have to report it or to whom the report needs to be made. Teachers, counselors, administrators and all school staff are at risk of being charged with a criminal offense themselves for failing to make a proper report in a timely manner. Attorney Joel Hand will share his experiences dealing with these issues and cases as well as an overview of the statutory requirements and applicable appellate court decisions.
