Restorative Practices Readiness for Leaders Series - a Counselor Connect event
Restorative Practices Readiness for Leaders Series - a Counselor Connect event
Monday September 26
9:30 am – 12:30 pm

DESCRIPTION

Implementing Restorative Practices is about more than sitting in a circle. Successful installation starts with both systems & implementation leaders understanding the roots of the work, the principles that drive it, and the practices that bring it to life. For implementation to be sustainable over time, however, it must be anchored and aligned to other work taking place and can not exist in a silo. A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework provides the structures necessary to support the use of data for decision-making, to progress-monitor implementation over time, and to evaluate student and staff outcomes.

The Legal Ins-&-Outs of Accommodating Trans* & Non-Binary Students: a Counselor Connect event
    Wednesday September 7
    11:00 am – 12:30 pm

    DESCRIPTION

The generation of students in K-12 schools right now, and the generation to come, understand gender differently than the adults in their lives have been socialized to understand gender and sexuality. Students who identify as trans*, non-binary, or gender expansive may have requests in schools that include everything from bathroom and locker room use, to their name and pronouns, to extracurricular activities and special education needs. What are the rights of the students? What are the rights of the teachers or parents who may disagree with a student’s transition? Should each school have a policy or procedure in place? What does the future look like for transgender students in schools? In this session, presenter Jessica Heiser wears two hats: (1) the experienced attorney who will discuss the complex legal obligations of schools under ever-shifting federal and state laws, and (2) the certified change practitioner who will empower you to think larger than avoiding getting sued and more about how to create inclusive learning environments for all.

Don't Risk Going to Jail: The Duty to Report Child Abuse or Neglect
    Wednesday September 14
    11:00 am – 12:00 pm

    DESCRIPTION

Under Indiana law, everyone has a duty to report child abuse or neglect. Nonetheless, most people do not fully understand what they have to report, when they have to report it or to whom the report needs to be made. Teachers, counselors, administrators and all school staff are at risk of being charged with a criminal offense themselves for failing to make a proper report in a timely manner. Attorney Joel Hand will share his experiences dealing with these issues and cases as well as an overview of the statutory requirements and applicable appellate court decisions.

To say that we are living through a time of great change is a dramatic understatement. The question then, is at a time of significant political turbulence who do we meaningfully create two-way conversations with stakeholders in a way that leads to authentic engagement and builds trust with our stakeholders? In this session, we will provide a roadmap for bringing diverse stakeholders together around shared values for our children.
