The calendar flips to September, and suddenly everyone’s talking about “fresh starts,” “new beginnings,” and “clean slates.” Teachers get hit especially hard with this narrative. New classroom setup, new routines, new intentions. It’s energizing. It’s also exhausting.
But here’s what I’d like to offer instead: September is permission to be human.
Permission to Not Have It All Figured Out
You don’t need to have the perfect seating chart on Day 1. You don’t need a color-coded, fully laminated system for everything. Some of the best teachers I know stumble through September, learn what their specific students need, and then build their systems. Your classroom doesn’t have to be Instagram-perfect to be effective. Instead – aim for Instagram-perfect MOMENTS… you will be surprised at how many of those show up!

“Education isn’t about reinventing the wheel – it’s about finding wheels that work for your specific classroom road.”
Permission to Steal (Or… ADAPT)
See a strategy that works for another teacher? Take it. Modify it. Make it yours. Education isn’t about reinventing the wheel—it’s about finding wheels that work for your specific classroom road. Borrow ideas without guilt, and give yourself permission to abandon what doesn’t stick. Some of my most favorite activities and projects are ones that I observed other teachers doing. Imitation is always the best form of flattery! And remember – give credit where credit is due! I love to hear from colleagues when they use an idea or activity from my classroom, and I make sure to compliment others and give credit when I do the same.

Permission to Prioritize Your Well-being
September is when we make promises: “This year, I’ll grade papers the same day,” “I’ll never stay past 3:30,” “I’ll have work-life balance.” Then October hits, and we’re back to our old patterns. Here’s the truth: you can’t pour from an empty cup, and your students need you to be sustainable, not overly superhuman. Pick just ONE thing that genuinely matters for your mental health and protect it fiercely.
Permission to Fail Forward
That activity you planned? Might flop. That new classroom management strategy? Might need tweaking by Week 2. That lesson you were so excited about? Could totally miss the mark with this group of kids. Failure isn’t the end; it’s information and data to help you keep growing. September is the perfect time to normalize trying things that don’t work, because you’ve got time to adjust. Remember that we teach our kids every day that mistakes can happen, and it is ok. So, let’s model what we actually teach!
“Your students need you to be sustainable, not overly superhuman.”
Permission to Love What You Do – AND Still Find It Hard
Teaching is simultaneously the most rewarding and most draining job. Both can be true. You can adore your students and still need a break from them. You can believe deeply in your work and still feel overwhelmed. September doesn’t have to be the month where you “get it right”— it’s the month where you get honest about what you need to sustain this beautiful, messy work.
So as September rolls in, skip the pressure to have it all figured out. Give yourself permission instead.
Your classroom – and your sanity – will thank you.
