PD in Five Minutes or Less

Written by: Educator Barnes

July 8, 2026

No matter how good we are, we can always get better and add to our tool kits. Research-based practices as well as technology continue to expand each day. With this in mind, instructional coaches and school and district leaders have teachers attend professional development. Some sessions empower teachers and remind them why they entered the profession. Other sessions explain all the new research-based practices. Although those PDs are important, many times teachers leave without changing any part of their practice because there was no explicit and direct strategy or it was merely a feel-good session.

Just like the students they teach, teachers don’t need tons of information thrown at them all at once. Leaders can do this, but it does not mean teachers will change their habits. Instead, narrowing down to one area and a few actionable items can ease the overwhelm teachers have and allow them to see what they can quickly implement. If teachers cannot figure out how to quickly implement a strategy, they are probably not going to do it.

With this in mind, Teacher Tips in Five Minutes or Less was born. The first arc of the series focused on teachers, K-12, regardless of subject. The second arc, Teacher Tips in Five Minutes of Less – New Teacher Edition, focuses on providing strategies to teachers who are new to the profession or new to the school.

Additionally, we are always looking for more teacher tips to highlight. If you would like to be featured in this series, please reach out to KeepIndianaLearning@ciesc.org.

To view the past five-minute tips, go to the playlist on the Keep Indiana Learning YouTube channel.

Last, remember, one small change implemented consistently over time can make a difference, so don’t be afraid to try one of these teacher tips.
