Decoding the Diploma: A Parent’s Guide to Indiana’s New High School Requirements

Written by: Glow & Grow

The word “parent” is both a noun and a verb. Parent, as a noun, is a title. Parent, as a verb, are the actions taken to ensure children receive training and guidance to grow into well-rounded, responsible, and emotionally well adults.

The last stop before adulthood is high school. During this time, teens are figuring out who they want to be, and they are asserting themselves more with their parents. Parents don’t always know how to balance this assertive behavior while also ensuring their children are meeting all the needed milestones to prepare for their post-secondary goals, whether that be enlistment into the military, employment at a company, or enrollment into a college or university. Knowing there are three potential post-secondary tracks, the Indiana Department of Education decided it was time to shift to a new diploma with those tracks as the focus.

The new Indiana diploma has three tracks: enrollment, employment, and enlistment. In each track, students can complete extra requirements to earn the honors seal or the honors plus seal. The class of 2029 will be the first class graduating with the new Indiana high school diploma. My identical twin sons will be part of that cohort.

The nonprofit organization Glow & Grow Inc hosts a podcast called Parenting is an Action Word. Under the umbrella of the Parenting is an Action Word podcast, there will be a special arc focused on high school and the new diploma. In collaboration with Keep Indiana Learning, we will support parents in walking alongside their high school children and also provide insight from students and parents to support school leaders, counselors, and teachers in better supporting the class of 2029 and beyond.
