Preparing Educators as Schools Reopen: Responding to Student Adversity and Trauma

As educators prepare for students to return to school during these unprecedented times, we know there is a greater need than ever before to be ready to respond to the unique needs of children and youth. We understand that our students have been out of school for five months, without the typical routine of school, socialization, and learning, and thus may present new challenges upon their return. In response to these unparalleled times, CIESC is partnering with highly regarded expert Dr. Lori Desautels to provide learning to help us better prepare to welcome our students back to school.

Dr. Lori Desautels has been an Assistant Professor at Butler University since 2016 where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate programs in the College of Education. The Applied Educational Neuroscience Certificate, created by Lori in 2016, is specifically designed to meet the needs of educators, counselors, and administrators who work beside children and adolescents who have, and are, experiencing adversity and trauma. Lori’s passion is engaging students through the application of neuroscience as it applies to attachment, regulation, and educator brain state, and teaching students and staff about their neuroanatomy, thus integrating Mind Brain Teaching learning principles and strategies into her coursework at Butler.

The CIESC Counselor Connect and Keep Indiana Learning Steering Committees, in partnership with the Indiana School Counselor Association, are excited to announce an upcoming professional development opportunity with Dr. Lori Desautels, How Brain Development, Learning and Behaviors Are Affected by Adversity. While we understand that everyone is busy getting ready to start a new school year, we are thrilled to offer this vital and timely virtual session with Dr. Lori Desautels, one of the country’s foremost experts on social-emotional learning and neuroscience, on Friday, July 24 from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

You can find more information about this event, as well as future professional development opportunities, on our Counselor Connect website under Professional Development Opportunities.
