Let’s Fall into Reading!
Written by: Morgan Mason
It’s time to fall into reading with the INLearning Partnership! In 2022, the Fall Equinox arrives on Thursday, September 22. There’s something special about curling up by the fireplace with a good book, while the leaves begin to fall and the weather cools off. What better way to kick off the season than by celebrating literacy and reading!

The What:
The INLearning Partnership is a collaboration between Keep Indiana Learning, the IDOE, and the INLearning Lab. Each month, we collaborate on a series of events which highlights a strategic topic. This month, we are focusing on a variety of topics designed to showcase literacy and celebrate reading. Below, you’ll find information about the daily livestream events happening next week. Join us as we fall into reading through learning and sharing!
The Who:
Brenda Copple Boulais is a retired educator and author of the book, Brainysaurus. Brainysaurus is a children’s book for understanding how to love and care for our amazing brain. During her livestream, she will read her book to viewers and share the journey she went on in order to write it. Check this out if you’re interested in neuroscience made simple!
Interested in learning more about the Science of Reading but don’t know where to start? Morgan Mason and Erin Moore will be sharing an overview of the Science of Reading and the five main components that are fundamental to reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Along with new knowledge, you will leave this session with strategies you can take back and apply in your classroom. Morgan Mason and Erin Moore are two of the Training Support Specialists leading the Indiana Literacy Cadre and STEM Cadre implementation. They spent the summer immersed in training and learning around the Science of Reading.
Francine Conde is a Teacher Librarian at Eastbrook Elementary School in the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township. She will be sharing her love of all things reading and her wealth of knowledge around integrating reading with technology. This session will be beneficial for anyone who is supporting a new reader, whether you’re in the classroom or at home.
Cindy Ahonen and Amanda Foster are educators at Elwood Elementary School in Elwood, Indiana. Cindy Ahonen serves as the school’s Literacy Coach, while Amanda Foster serves as the school’s Title I coach. Elwood Elementary School is one of the schools participating in the Indiana Literacy Cadre this year. Cindy and Amanda will be sharing how they are changing the way they teach reading. They’ll include information about how classroom teachers, Title I groups, English Language groups, and preschool teachers are all making the shift to a Science of Reading approach to teaching reading. Check this out if you’re interested in learning more about this shift!
Melissa Gill is an Instructional Specialist at the Wabash Valley Education Center in West Lafayette, Indiana. During her session, she will be sharing her expertise on Scarborough’s Reading Rope. Scarborough’s Rope is a model of the many strands of language comprehension and word recognition that weave into proficient reading. Learning about this model is advantageous for both educators and parents. Teachers can utilize this model to help them identify where struggling readers may need more help. Teachers can share this model with parents to help them understand why their child is struggling and why teachers use a variety of methods for teaching in the classroom.
