Exploring Dual Language Learning at Global Preparatory Academy
Written by: Andrew Pillow
In a recent episode of the Dual Language Education series for Keep Indiana Learning, Educator Barnes caught up with Dr. Mariama Shaheed to discuss Dual Language Learning at Global Prep Academy.
Dr. Shaheed’s is the founder of the program. Her passion for dual language immersion began during her tenure in Pike Township on the northwest side of Indianapolis. She noticed an increasing diversity among students and a growing number of Spanish-speaking families. Despite studying Spanish for nine years, she found herself struggling to communicate effectively. A six-week immersion in Mexico helped her realize the power of language immersion in fostering fluency. This experience ignited her vision for Global Prep Academy, which officially opened its doors in 2016 in the Riverside area.
“For the youngest learners in pre-K, 90% of their day is immersed in Spanish. From kindergarten onwards, students follow a 50/50 model, spending half their day learning in English and the other half in Spanish. This approach ensures students achieve grade-level standards in both languages, fostering true bilingualism.”
A Day in the Life at Global Prep Academy
Global Prep Academy serves students from pre-K through eighth grade. For the youngest learners in pre-K, 90% of their day is immersed in Spanish. From kindergarten onwards, students follow a 50/50 model, spending half their day learning in English and the other half in Spanish. This approach ensures students achieve grade-level standards in both languages, fostering true bilingualism.
Supporting Teachers and Staff
One of the significant challenges for a dual language immersion school is staffing. Global Prep Academy boasts a diverse teaching staff, with Spanish-speaking teachers from 16 different countries. The school recruits teachers both internationally and domestically, providing support for those needing to obtain their Indiana teaching licenses. Teachers are also given professional development opportunities and are paired with coaches and mentors to ensure they can deliver high-quality bilingual education.
Navigating Visa Challenges
Navigating the visa process can be daunting for schools looking to recruit international teachers. Global Prep Academy partners with the Sagamore Institute to handle the legalities and paperwork, allowing the school to focus on education. New teachers receive extensive support, including housing, assistance with obtaining Social Security numbers, and help with other essential tasks, ensuring a smooth transition to life in the United States.
Cultural Immersion and Community Engagement
Global Prep Academy emphasizes cultural immersion, which extends beyond language learning. The school hosts several cultural events throughout the year, including Dia de los Muertos celebrations, African-American History Month events, and December multicultural festivities. Additionally, various clubs, like the Latin dance club, provide students with opportunities to engage with different cultures and showcase their talents.
Dr. Shaheed stresses the importance of using authentic Spanish texts rather than relying solely on translations. This approach ensures that students engage with genuine cultural narratives, enhancing their learning experience. Teachers are supported with stipends for the extra work required to translate and adapt resources.
Success Stories
The true measure of Global Prep Academy’s success is seen in its graduates. The school celebrated its first class of eighth-grade graduates in 2023, all of whom spoke in both English and Spanish during their graduation speeches. This bilingual proficiency and confidence reflect the long-term commitment and effort invested in their education. Parents have high praise for the program.
“I love absolutely everything about it. I have 2 children that are fluent in Spanish. They can read, write, and translate,” says Stephanie Bousman, a parent of two GPA students. “This program has opened so many doors for these 2 boys!”
“Both are fluent in the language even though my son tells people he is not. However, if he wants candy or chips he always can seem to navigate the language with perfection,” says Tanya Shook, another parent of 2 GPA students. “Also, if he has the chance to correct someone trying to say a word, he all of the sudden knows Spanish like a pro.”
“Dr. Shaheed emphasizes that dual language immersion is a long-term commitment, essential for preparing students for a diverse future.”
Final Thoughts
Dr. Shaheed emphasizes that dual language immersion is a long-term commitment, essential for preparing students for a diverse future. She encourages educators and families to embrace this journey, despite initial challenges. For families, she reassures that while learning a new language may seem daunting, the benefits of cultural and linguistic immersion far outweigh the challenges.
