Read alouds that celebrate people and places often to lead some of our most lively classroom conversations. We know this level of engagement is essential to promote the speaking and listening skills necessary for student achievement. Many educators, however, are feeling hesitant about their read-aloud selections as communities become increasingly critical of materials that challenge dominant narratives. This leads to the question: how do we honor the proven literacy practice of reading aloud without sacrificing our most interesting texts? Session presenters will facilitate a dialogue with participants and provide candid advice for talking with parents about classroom and school library materials.
