Teachers and Trauma: What is it? And how do we cope when it happens to us?
Presenter: Lindsey Acton
Educators face traumas daily, whether they be the traumas brought into the classroom by their students, or ones they actually experience. Yet, no one talks about the pieces of their own humanity that teachers must give away in order to help themselves and their students cope with these life-changing events. It is critical to support teachers’ mental health if we want to attract and retain the most qualified professionals to educate our youth. It is my intention to talk about mental health, coping strategies, and other ways that teachers can work through what are often compounding traumas that they face in their careers, and how they can build relationships with students to best support their own abilities to cope and continue in the profession.
