Project EL-Pact: Elevating Literacy Practice Among Communities of Teachers

Researchers have historically argued that literacy is a social activity (Luke, 1991; Street, 1994; Vasquez & Egawa, 2004). However, are we asking students to learn literacy in social situations? How can we utilize groups and conversations to make literacy engaging and accessible to all students? This program will take the science of reading tenets and provide ideas to make each tenet social and engaging. Each day will provide a deep dive into a Science of Reading tenet where participants collaborate in groups to discuss and create social literacy projects and practices.

Since adults also learn best in collaboration, our cohort will bring teachers and leaders together to learn and plan. We will set goals together, decide how to hold each other accountable, and celebrate success. Teachers can create resources to share and build communities of practice as we navigate changes in our state’s literacy curriculum.
