Engaging Students in Mathematical Conversations: Discourse

Laurie Ferry

Engaging students in mathematical conversations encourages students to think critically and mathematically. It asks them to think about the ‘why’ and not just the ‘how’. Student to student conversations can be more challenging in a virtual environment. This session will address those challenges and share tools and strategies teachers can utilize to enhance student engagement in the virtual math classroom. We will answer questions such as; “What type of tasks are best for discourse?” or “How do I engage ALL students in this dialogue?”.
